Porous Metal-Organic Framework Materials: Applications and Future Technologies

Metal-organic framework (MOF) materials are a new class of porous advanced materials constructed by the assembly of metal nodes and bridging organic molecules. They are a form of “Molecular Lego”, or (for older readers) “Molecular Meccano” to give highly ordered 3D materials that have a range of important applications, including in separation and purification science and catalysis. Their importance has been reflected recently by the award of the 2025 Nobel Prize.

Professor Martin Schröder is Research Professor of Chemistry at the University of Manchester, and was one of the university’s Vice Presidents and Dean of the Faculty of Science and Engineering from 2015-2025.

He will discuss the chemistry and properties of MOFs and their associated discoveries and the future advances that are being developed.
